BE WARY ABOUT SCAMMERS USING FAKE FACEBOOK

- Dear Editor, ELEMIYA PHIRI, Lusaka.

PEOPLE should be wary about scammers who create Facebook accounts to swindle unsuspected members of the general public. The scammers use names of prominent people to create fake Facebook accounts.

However, the case in point is one where some criminally minded individuals created five fake Facebook accounts in the name of the Minister of Local Government and

Rural Development Mr Garry Nkombo. Impeccable source from Police Assistant Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi is that two suspects were recently nabbed in connection with impersonation and operating fictitious Facebook accounts depicting Honourable Gary Nkombo’s profile picture.

The two suspects are Simon Mwalubulo aged 26 and his accomplice Jackson Banda aged 35 both of Bauleni compound.

The suspects were working with other people duping the unsuspected members of the public on the pretext that some people would be assisted to get employed and access the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

In a nutshell, to dupe simply means to deceive someone, usually by making that person do something that they did not intend to do.

The high poverty levels in the country can be cited as one of the reasons compelling some people to abuse social media particularly Facebook to swindle people of their hard earned money. The logical thing is that people should make money in a legitimate way instead of stealing.

Zambia Information and Communication Technology Authority (ZICTA) should be commended for working with the Zambia Police Service to bring the criminals to book.

One of, if not the most important thing for the police to do is to sensitise the general public about the scammers who are in the habit of creating the fake Facebook accounts to dupe people.

The scammers should be arrested to face the full wrath of law. This will deter wouldbe offenders.
