WE SHOULD BUILD A CLIMATE RESILIENT EDUCATION SYSTEM TO KEEP GIRLS IN SCHOOL

-

SPEAKING at the 56th Session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD@56) taking place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York under the theme: "Population, Education and Sustainable Development".

We demonstrated government commitments in Keeping Girls in schools through the KGS project benefiting over 130,175 children and also other state investments in the education system such as the unprecedented Free Education policy.

However ,with over 12.5 million girls projected that they will miss school by 2025 in low and medium income countries as a result of climate shocks , there is an urgent call to invest in innovation solutions that will address climate change and build an education system which is resilient to climate change in order to mitigate climate shocks that affects the education of girls and perpetuate vulnerability of girls such as exposure to gender based violenc, child marriage, food security and related gender based inequalities and poverty.

The side event was hosted by Cameron under the theme :Keeping Girls in school in the context of Climate fragility: Challenges and impact on Sustainable development: Hosted by Cameroon and co-sponsored by UNFPA, UNICEF and UNESCO.
