LUSAKA Tigers Women’s Hockey Club coach Floyd Chomba has set his eyes on winning the 2023 National Hockey League which kicked off last weekend.

Tigers began the new season with an impressive 4-2 win over rivals Lusaka Sharks who put up a determined fight on match day one.

Chombga, who described the win over sharks as a good start said his players had improved and were determined to fight for the championship to stand a chance to represent the country at the continental club championship scheduled for December 2023 in Malawi. “A good start with the team as we went up against the most decorated team in the Zambia Hockey League as far as the women competition is concerned. So much improvement in the team and a lot of individual growth was displayed,” Chomba said.

“We hope to fight for the top spot so that we can be able to represent the country in Malawi this December at the ACCC. From now all we will do is work on our weaknesses and keep the momentum high to enable a smooth top finish,” he said.

Chomba hailed their fans for inspiring the team to do better this season as they seek to achieve their objective of scooping the championship. In the other games played last Sunday Springfield Women’s Hockey Club started the new season with a 4-2 win over Zambezi while DE Stars and Hotspars where involved in a goalless stalemate.

Meanwhile, in the men’s league DE Stars held Zambezi to a 2-2 stalemate while Springfield thumped Hotspurs 4-1.

Lusaka Sharks started their campaign on an exciting note by humbling Olympic Africa 17-0.
