ERRATIC WATER SUPPLY IN KANFINSA IRK KANG’OMBE

- By ROGERS KALERO

KAMF INSA Member of Parliament (MP) Christopher Kang'ombe has said the persistent erratic water supply in various parts of the constituency need a long lasting solution to help put smiles on the faces of thousands of residents who have suffered for a long time

Mr Kang'ombe said thousands of residents of Ndeke Village, Amis, old and New Ndeke and Presidential areas have lived with persistent erratic water supply for many years despite being promised by Nkana Water Supply and Sanitation Company (NWSSC) that the water problems will be addressed

Mr Kang'ombe cautioned NWSSC to quickly address the water problems in the named areas or else residents will get fed up of their explanations and consequently rise against the water utility company

Mr Kang'ombe was speaking on Sunday when he went on the ground to carry out a sample on various houses to assess whether reports from NWSSC to the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation that the water problems in the named areas had been resolved were true or not"I have decided t o do a sample on various houses so that I get the clear and true picture of the water situation in Ndeke Village, Amis, Old and New Ndeke and Presidential. Whenever I complain to the Minister of Water Development about the problem of water in these areas, the Minister tells me that NWSSC have told him that the problem has been resolved

"But, what am getting on the ground is completely different. We have a situation where some houses only receive water for 30 minutes, while others receive water for a only one hour per day. So , am getting details so that I can go and give them to the Minister so that he knows the situation on the ground,'' Mr Kang'ombe said

During a sample which started in H section of Ndeke Village, the residents told Mr Kang'ombe that water has been a problem and usually trickles around 06.00 hours and after 30 or one hour, it goes until the following day

For those who fail to wake up at 06.00 hours and get some water within 30 minutes or one hour, they buy from those who have put up boreholes at K2 per 20 litre bucket In Amis area, the situation was worse as some houses have had no water for more 5 years and depend on water from nearby boreholes who either sell them or allow them to draw water from the borehole for free Julian Chansa, a resident of Old Ndeke also told the area MP that water has been a big problem and people were suffering because of persistent erratic water supply, adding that the resident do not even know why NWSSC exist

"Am sorry, but I can tell you that I really don't know why the so called Nkana Water exist because water problems in Ndeke have been here for a long time. Today, they come and dig up pipes in the name of addressing the problem, but nothing happens

"If anything, when they come in the name of fixing the problem, they worsen the problem. Yes, worsening the problem because even those who had some water trickling from their taps, it completely stops. It completely stops and the water runs dry. What is that? .'' Ms Chansa said
