Relief maize distributed in Kasenengwa
Kasenengwa District Commissioner Rachael Phiri says government is aware of the hunger situation in some parts of the district, hence the distribution of the relief maize to mitigate the situation.
Ms Phiri said a rapid assessment of the hunger situation was done in the district where it was established that some households had exhausted their food stocks as early as June last year.
She said this yesterday when she flagged off the distribution of relief maize in the district at the Reformed Church of Zambia (RCZ) Nazareth congregation.
Ms Phiri said 1, 044 bags will be given as food for free targeting the vulnerable such as the aged, disabled, widows and child headed households among others while 4, 176 bags will be food for work.
She added that under food for work, members of the community will be required to do some community work on the projects to be identified and thereafter be given the food.
‘’As a district, we received a total of 5220 x 50kg bags of white maize. From the allocation given, 20 percent will be given as food for free targeting the vulnerable while 80 percent will be food for work,’’ she disclosed.
The District Commissioner urged those charged with the responsibility of identifying beneficiaries to be impartial in the selection process.
And one of the beneficiaries Justina Miti from Kaluwawa Village thanked government for coming to the aid of most families as the hunger situation is critical.
