SAFER, SECURE INTERNET CAN DEEPEN DEMOCRACY - BLOGGERS OF ZAMBIA
SAFER and enhanced internet usage has become a tool for deepening democracy as it has continued playing an increasingly important role in the daily lives of citizens, the Bloggers of Zambia has said.
Richard Mulonga, the Bloggers of Zambia chief executive officer has called on Zambians and stakeholders to take responsibility in harnessing the potential use of the internet while safeguarding the well-being of all users.
At a Safer Internet Day yesterday, Mr Mulonga, said the celebrations in the Zambian context should not be under-estimated because the digital landscape had continued to play an increasingly integral role in the
daily lives of citizens.
Celebrated under the theme; “Together for a Better Internet,” Mr Mulonga stated that the theme was resonating deeply with the commitment of the government and various stakeholders to ensure a secure digital environment for individuals, families, and businesses.”
“Safer Internet Day provides a platform for all citizens to reinforce our commitment to online safety and empowerment Zambians with the tools they need to navigate the digital world securely,” Mr Mulonga said.
“To commemorate Safer Internet Day 2024, Bloggers of Zambia has organized events, including a hackathon by University students on online safety, online creative content for education and awareness across the country,” he said.
These initiatives, Mr Mulonga explained, aim to educate individuals of all ages on the importance of online safety, responsible digital behaviour and the protection of personal information.
He explained that the goal is to equip Zambians with the knowledge and skills needed to protect themselves and their communities from online threats.
“We would like to encourage individuals, schools, businesses, community organisations and all Zambians to promote Internet safety best practices. By engaging in conversations, sharing resources, and fostering a culture of responsible digital citizenship, we can collectively build a safer and more secure digital future for al Zambians,” Mr Mulonga said.
