Chongwe District to elect new WDCs
Municipal Council says it has started sensitizing Community members ahead of the Ward Development Committee elections slated for 15th March, 2024.
Speaking an interview with ZANIS in Chongwe, Chongwe Municipal Council Public Relations Officer, Peter Sukwa said Officers from the Local Authority and devolved government departments have started raising awareness on the elections in various zones across the 21 wards to educate residents on the election modalities as the term for the current WDCs comes to an end this month.
Mr Sukwa said the sensitization awareness will be conducted first followed by registration of voters, and elections which will be held on the 15th March, 2024.
"The Nominations of the Zonal representative elections are expected to take place from 26th February, 2024 to 5th March , 2024 in the respective Zones adding that all candidates are expected to file in their nomination papers during the stated period," he said.
Mr Sukwa said members of the Community should be aware that only those who are above 18 years of age with a Green National Registration Cards, or Resident Permit in case of Foreign Nationals and residents of the respective Zones for not less than two years are eligible to participate in the process.
"The candidates are also expected to be supported by 5 community members who should be registered voters in those Zones," he said.
Mr Sukwa further appealed to all wards to abide by the electoral code of conduct and participate fully in the upcoming WDC elections in their respective wards.
According to the constitution, the term for WDCs is 2years, 6months.
