NGO partners with UNICEF in Water and Sanitation in Chienge

- ZANIS

A Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) based in Luapula Province has partnered with the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) to build the capacity of players in the Water and Sanitation Sector in Five Districts of the area.

Vision Africa Region Network (VAREN) says the Organisation came up with the initiative after realizing that there were some gaps in the Capacity of the District Water and Sanitation (D-WASHE) Committee, Village Water Management Committees (V-WASHE) and Area Pump Menders that requires to be built.

ZANIS reports that VAREN Project Officer, Nonde Lwatula said his Organisation will build the capacity of Structures at District, Sub-District and Community level in order to strengthen their operations in Chienge, Mwense, Nchelenge, Mansa and

Mwansabombwe Districts.

“What we have noticed is that when UNICEF drills boreholes in various parts of the Province it leaves a Committee to run the Water Points, however in some cases their longevity is hampered by ineffective Management. “Mr Lwatula said.

He said in order to resolve the challenge UNICEF will periodically be giving VAREN targets to achieve.

Mr Lwatula revealed that in Chienge District, his Organisation has decided to operate within the Water Points located in catchment areas of two Heath Facilities, namely Chipunga Rural Health Centre and Puta Rural Health Centre.

Mr Lwatula said the major contribution VAREN will make is to train the Water and Sanitation Structures in all facets of management of the Water Points and the Sanitation facilities.
