Government should provide roadmap on high cost of living

- ELEMIYA PHIRI, Lusaka.

Dear Editor, THE United Party for National Development (UPND) should provide a clear roadmap on how it will address the high cost of living people are grappling with.

It is in the public domain that the prices of goods and services have been increasing by the day.

It is the first time that the price of mealie meal, our staple food, is currently selling at K350.00 for a 25kg bag of breakfast mealie meal. This price is beyond the affordability of the majority of Zambians. This is unacceptable as a matter of fact.

The UPND when in opposition campaigned on the premise of lowering the cost of living so that people can enjoy a better life.

The UPND also promised cheap mealie meal at K50.00 for a 25kg bag of breakfast mealie meal, cheap fuel, cheap fertiliser, more jobs for the youth, appreciation of the Kwacha against the United States Dollar (US$1.00) after Mr. Hakainde Hichilema is sworn in as the Republican President, among others.

The Vice President, Ms. Mutale Nalumango last Sunday featured on Diamond

Television on a programme dubbed COSTA hosted by Costa Mwansa.

Ms. Nalumango missed an opportunity to tell Zambians how the UPND government intends to address the ever-skyrocketing cost of living. Ms. Nalumango was quizzed by the interviewer and she failed to answer most of the questions.

It is evident that the Vice President's failure to provide a clear roadmap on how the new dawn administration intends to ameliorate the high cost of living was not only regrettable but also disappointing.

However, it is mind boggling that the UPND government refuses to admit that it has failed Zambians by not actualising the campaign promises which have culminated into a poor state of the economy.

Moving forward, the new dawn administration should provide a clear roadmap to avert the high cost of living. If truth be told, it is this one: many people are grappling with high poverty levels and a lasting solution must be found. This should be expedited as a matter of urgency.
