Copperbelt records an increase in Cholera cases

COPPERBELT Province Permanent Secretary, Augustine Kasongo said that there is a rise in cholera cases in the area which needs concerted efforts to eradicate the epidemic.

Mr Kasongo disclosed that the province has recorded about 728 cases as of yesterday since the outbreak of the disease in December last year.

The Permanent Secretary has disclosed that about 38 deaths have been recorded and 46 people are admitted in the Cholera centres across the province.

He was speaking during the water and sanitation stakeholde­rs meeting at Levy Mwanawasa stadium in Ndola District that 38 cases were recorded in Ndola yesterday.

And District Commission­er, Joseph Phiri has urged the general public to observe health rules as a way to reduce the number of cases in the province.

Nkana Water Supply and Sanitation representa­tive Benjamin Machuta

said the institutio­n is putting in place all possible solutions to eradicate Cholera as they believe that clean water is one of the key factors in Cholera eradicatio­n.

Mr Machuta noted that the water utility company has increased the supply of water to areas that have been recording a high number of cholera cases.

Kitwe City Council Assistant Director for Public Health, Munyanga Kaluwa says there is need to change the community perception if Cholera is to be eradicated in the province.

She disclosed that they have assigned influentia­l people to champion the sensitizat­ion on Cholera in the community.

Meanwhile, Emergency Coordinato­r for Doctors without Borders, Carla Melki has commended the measures government has put in place to eradicate the disease.
