Ex- Kalulushi Mayor, Mulenga, calls for joint efforts to end cholera
FORMER Kalulushi Mayor, Rashida Mulenga, has made a commitment to work with the Kalulushi Municipal Council (KMC) to stop the spread of cholera in the area by supplementing their efforts.
Ms Mulenga is aware that diseases such as cholera call for collective responsibility from various stakeholders.
She encouraged all Zambians to join the fight against cholera because the devastating effects of the pandemic was not selective, but cut across religion, tribe and political affiliations.
Ms Mulenga said this at the weekend when she distributed cases of chlorine to Sitwe and Nsokolo Wards where she also sensitised people on the importance of hygiene and indiscriminate disposal of garbage.
"As a former Mayor who understands how the council operates, I thought I should, in my small and humble way, supplement the efforts of the local authority, through the humble donation of Chlorine.
"Besides, the donation of Chlorine, we need to talk about the importance of hygiene and indiscriminate disposal of garbage. We need to change our mindset when it comes to garbage disposal,'' Ms Mulenga said.
Ms Mulenga is among stakeholders who took part in the flagging off of the cholera prevention cleaning programme last month at Luato market.
She said it is imperative for various stakeholders to join efforts with Government in stopping the spread of cholera and mitigating its effects to ensure a clean and heath environment.
"Let us all join hands in fighting cholera starting from our homes. It is not a favour we are doing for anyone else but for our own benefits. We need to change our mindsets towards the issue of waste management. We see it as only a council responsibility, removing ourselves from it,'' Ms Mulenga said.
The KMC has in the recent past, put in place measures aimed at curbing the spread of cholera which include closing down bars for operating under unsanitary conditions.
