ZNS COMMENCES PLANTING OF IRRIGATED MAIZE

-

THE Zambia National Service (ZNS) has commenced the planting of 100 hectares of irrigated maize at its Chanyanya fields in Kafue district.

Flagging off the planting exercise, Minister of Defence Ambrose Lufuma says the quick implementation by ZNS towards the planned mitigation intervention to drought is impressive and is testament to the ability of the Defense forces to respond to disasters and emergencies.

ZANIS reports that Mr Lufuma said the planting of irrigated maize will help to ensure food security amid the dry spell being experienced in the country.

The Minister has however, appealed for use of technology in production and prediction of whether changes for the country to be more prepared for future disasters and enhance production of the staple food.

And Zambia National Service ZNS Commander, Maliti Solochi disclosed that the 100 hectares is the first phase and that an additional 30 hectares will be cultivated as soon as the earlier planted irrigated maize is harvested.

Lt. Col. Maliti reiterated that ZNS stands committed to contribute to the country’s food security and that more efforts will be implemented by the ZNS in response to President Hakainde Hichilemas directive.

Meanwhile, Zambia Air Force Commander, Oscar Nyoni has confirmed that the Air Force has increased its land allocation for maize cultivation in Lufwanyama district and that irrigated maize will be planted soon.

And Zambia Correctional Service Commissioner General, Frederick Chilukutu said the Correctional Service has already planted 1,000 hectares of irrigated maize in anticipation of the weather change.

President Hakainde Hichilema last week declared the drought situation as a national disaster and emergency and tasked the security wings to step forward and help mitigate the negative effects of the drought by producing more maize.
