HH’s proposed laws a threat to Zambia’s democracy

-

THE intentions of Mr. Hakainde Hichilema and his regime have raised concerns among Zambian citizens and the international community.

Despite Zambia being a democratic state, the government’s proposed draconian laws aimed at shrinking social media space, including the requirement of a licence for publishing videos, going live, or sharing audiovisual content on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok, are a cause for alarm.

It is crucial for citizens to understand the significance of their freedom of expression and their role in preserving the hard-earned democracy.

Zambians have long enjoyed the fundamental freedoms of expression, enabling them to voice their opinions, advocate for change, and hold authorities accountable.

These liberties are the bedrock of democracy, ensuring citizen participation and fostering an environment of transparency and accountability. The proposed laws, if enacted, would undermine these core principles that make Zambia a thriving democratic nation.

Mr. Hichilema’s regime must be cautious not to tread the path of authoritarianism, which would jeopardise the nation’s democratic fabric.

The desire to limit citizens’ rights, as evidenced by the proposed social media laws, raise questions about the intentions of the government.

It is essential to understand that democracy is a collective effort, and no individual or group should have unchecked power to infringe upon the rights and freedoms of the people.

As guardians of democracy, it is our responsibility to stand up against any attempt to suppress our rights. We cannot allow Mr. Hichilema and his regime to trample upon the democratic values that millions have fought for, sacrificing their lives in the process.

Our unity as Zambians lies in our commitment to safeguarding democratic principles and ensuring that the voices of the people remain amplified, unrestricted, and diverse.

Zambia’s democratic state and the freedoms bestowed upon its citizens are at stake. The proposed laws introduced by Mr. Hichilema’s regime aim to stifle social media space and curtail the right to freedom of expression.

As Zambians, we must rise against these dictatorial tendencies and protect the hard-earned democracy.

The time has come for every citizen to unite, assert their rights, and remind those in power that it is their duty to uphold and respect the democratic values that define our great nation.
