WORKPLACE ROMANCE

…the Complex Dynamics of Love in Professional Settings

- Wandera Zahura. The author is a Human Resource Practitioner.

Love, an emotion that transcends boundaries and permeates every aspect of human existence, has sneaked its way into the place of work. Traditionally, the workplace, which is considered to be a stronghold of professionalism and decorum, is increasingly becoming a battleground for the controversial topic of ‘workplace romance’, with far reaching consequences.

Why the Rise of Workplace Romance?

The modern workplace is characterized by long hours, intense collaborations, shared values and a blend of personal and work-related exchanges. This act of being in the same space, spending significant time together, could have the potential to lead individuals to find themselves drawn to their colleagues in ways that extend beyond mere professional camaraderie.

It could also be argued that the rise of workplace romance, especially in African organizations, has gained significance owing to the fact that African societies are typically close-knit communities with strong social bonds. In such environments, personal relationships, including romantic ones, are naturally bound to flourish.

Furthermore, the emergent use of technological devices - which allows people to frequently communicate outside their office hours or location, have played a huge role in blurring the traditional boundaries between personal and professional lives.

Ethical Concerns of Workplace Romance

At the heart of workplace romance, lies the issue of solving the ethical quandaries they present. One wonders whether romantic relationships between colleagues are to be considered as being essentially unprofessional or their prevalence serves to demonstrate the evolving nature of ‘employee rights’ at the workplace.

While others may argue that romantic relationships may lead to an unprofessional atmosphere presenting a myriad of conflicts of interest, unfairness or favouritism, others contend that people have the right to connect romantically with whomever they wish, wherever it may be, with the workplace not being an exception. They further claim that workplace romance can enhance team dynamics with unity, companionship, lower absenteeism and higher levels of absenteeism being byproducts thereof.

In most organizations however, married couples or staff merely dating, cannot work in the same organization, as one of either the two could be pressured to resign. In other organizations, superior-subordinate relationships are forbidden as it is perceived that such relationships can create unusual power imbalances due to perceptions of unfair advantage, thereby comprising meritocracy within the workplace.

The dynamics within a team, with regards to maintaining harmony, may also be strained in the event of a breakup between two people, which can quickly manifest into office gossip and hostility, affecting not only the individuals involved but also other team members.

How to make Love Work at Work

To address the challenges posed by workplace romance, companies may implement strict policies governing employee relationships. These policies could aim to prevent conflicts of interest, maintain a professional work environment, and protect the company from potential legal ramifications. However, such policies maybe considered to infringe on individuals' personal lives and relationships, raising further questions about the boundary between private and professional lives.

Developing, communicating and outlining policies detailing the organizations stance on workplace relationships is a good deterrent when it comes to curbing workplace relationships. Such policies should clearly state conflict resolution mechanisms that can be applied to workplace romance situations.

While many organizations may not consider it mandatory, due to its capability to spawn office gossip, encouraging individuals involved in ‘workplace romance’ to disclose their relationship can help manage potential conflicts of interest and ensure transparency. This is particularly important when there is a hierarchical difference between the two individuals. In order to make this type of ‘love work’, an open door policy promoting open communication and mediation needs to be encouraged.

In other instances where workplace romance results in a breakup, managers may need to provide resources such as counselling services or any other form of support to help the individuals concerned to cope with the aftermath of the breakup, knowing fully well that a supportive environment can contribute to positive mental health and job satisfaction.

Overall, it is important to remember that every workplace is unique, and thus these policies and approaches may need to be tailored to the specific culture and dynamics of the organization. By addressing workplace romance with a combination of clear policies, open communication, and a commitment to fairness, organizations can navigate these situations effectively while fostering a positive and respectful work environment.
