- By ROGERS KALERO

TWO doctors stationed at Mufumbwe District Hospital under the Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) Mufumbwe Outreach programme carried out five operations which include two caesarian section, one hernia.

The ZFDS Mufumbwe Outreach programme started on Wednesday last week and came to an end on Wednesday this week.

The Outreach on Tuesday managed to attend to 310 patients at Nyansonso Rural health centre bringing the total number of patients attended to, to1,356 from the time the programme started.

The Mufumbwe Outreach has been offering quality services in far flung areas such as Kamizekenzeke, Kabanda, Mushima, Kabipupu and other rural health centres where Malaria cases have been dominant.

Speaking after carrying out an operation on a 32-year-old woman, Dr Musonda Mutale said the team had carried out five major operations at the hospital but stressed that with good publicity the team could have done more.

Dr Mutale said the people in the area should have taken advantage of the presence of the ZFDS in the district so that cases which needed specialist services could have been at attended to.

"The ZFDS team is in Mufumbwe district to provide treatment to those with cases which needed specialist treatment but the problem is that people are not turning up in big numbers because of little or no publicity. From the time we came here, last week, we have only done five major operations which included two caesarian section and one hernia " Dr Mutale

said.

And ZFDS Mufumbwe Outreach Team lead Mukuka Nkole said malaria cases were dominant in most rural health centres where the team had been operating.

"Malaria cases has been dominant in all the areas we have been to from the time we started the Mufumbwe outreach. What is important is to ensure that we reduce cases of malaria in various ways," Dr Nkole said.

And speaking earlier Musonwejyi ward Councilor Haggai Kenya thanked President Hakainde Hichilema for reviving the ZFDS.
