ARCHBISHOP DR BANDA DEFENDS FR MUKOSA’S HOMILY

-

But the CCZ, EFZ and ZCCB yesterday issued a joint statement that it was perplexing that after police issued the call out, Mr Thabo Kawana, Information and Media Permanet Secretary denied that Fr Mukosa had ever been summoned by police.

“It is highly irregular and unacceptable that contradictory statements and actions have emerged regarding Fr Chewe Mukosa’s situation especially from two senior government offices,” the statement read in part. The statement was signed by Fr Emmanuel Chikoya from CCZ, EFZ’s Bishop Andrew Mwenda and Fr Francis Mukosa of the Catholic bishops.

“This situation undermines transparency, accountability and the rule of law, all of which are crucial for a functioning and democratic state. We reiterate our stance against any form of harassment, intimidation, or undue pressure on individuals, especially religious leaders, who exercise their freedom of speech and expression responsibly,” the statement read.

The church mother bodies stated that any attempts to silence the clergy, discredit their message or interfere with their ability to carry out their mission will be resisted.

“The role of the church in advocating for justice, righteousness, and the well-being of society must be respected and protected at all times,” the statement read.

The church has since demanded for a clarification from the government over the circumstances that surrounded Fr Mukosa’s case and to ensure accountability for any wrongful actions or misinformation, and to uphold the principles of justice and fairness for all citizens.

The clerics stated that the church was committed to promoting peace, justice and respect for human rights and urged all stakeholders to work together to address challenges and build a society based on mutual trust, respect and integrity.
