GOVT SAYS UKA NOT REGISTERED, ILLEGAL

…Jack Mwiimbu says the alliance is not registered with the Registrar of Societies and its activities, including its public assemblies and press conferences are therefore outlawed

- By NATION REPORTER

THE State has said the United Kwacha Alliance (UKA) is an illegal political organisation because it has not been registered and its activities, which include holding press conferences or any other form of assembly are therefore outside the law.

Jack Mwiimbu, the Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security says UKA is an unregistered pressure group and that its operations and activities were therefore illegal and in breach of the law.

Mr Mwiimbu has hence ordered that it shall be irresponsible for the Zambia Police to allow UKA to proceed with its planned mass rally because according

to him, the alliance was an illegal political organisation.

He has ordered that political parties which have formed UKA should from now on begin operating independently from the alliance and that they should never gather under its name or umbrella.

At a media briefing yesterday to confirm the Zambia Police decision to object to the notification by UKA to hold its inaugural public mass rally, Mr

Mwiimbu said since the alliance was not registered with the Registrar of Societies, it had no right to conduct mass gatherings and that doing so would be breaking the law.

“On behalf of the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security, I want to make it abundantly clear that UKA is not registered as a pressure group or political party. We have received a lot of press queries and the latest is that the said UKA is intending to hold a rally in Kafue and have resolved to participate in all the future by-elections. I wish to inform you that the said UKA does not exist and is therefore an illegal society as far as the Ministry of Home Affairs is concerned,” Mr Mwiimbu said.

Mr Mwiimbu however claimed that the UPND government remained committed to respecting and protecting the rights of citizens and that unless and until the UKA was registered, it shall remain an illegal entity whose activities would remain outlawed.
