SHOCKING GOVERNMENT INSENSITIVITY

-

Dear Editor, HAMELESSLY, the minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Mr Jack Mwimbu claims that UKA was illegal. That statement was itself illegal and without legal force.

SThere is no such thing when an institution has an application pending before the government for registration, which is the case.

I agree with State Counsel Sakwiba Sikota that this government is displaying a very serious case of insensitivity and impunity.

What is happening with the situation in Parliament, the mingalato on the Copperbelt where two popular MPs, Joe Malanji and Bowman Lusambo were denied an opportunity to stand, by manipulating the Electoral Commission of Zambia and indeed the Judiciary were done brazenly to commit a grave injustice and irregularity.

The arrest and long detentions of opposition members will come to haunt them.

But the worst part is Government’s insensitivity to the suffering of ordinary Zambians who have the misfortune of falling ill. The government has simply refused to admit that the health system has collapsed.

Drug availability has never been at the level required for a very long time although propaganda seems to suggest that things have changed.

How many people have died because there are no drugs in hospitals and indeed how many cancer patients have died because of negligence by the government which has failed to repair equipment.

This Government must know that the country has a very long memory, those that have lost relatives to drug shortage, cholera and other vices will hold the President and his Minister to account. No amount of propaganda will protect them from accountability.

Sadly, it is not just drugs in short supply but indeed general level of services is pathetic. Long queues characterise all the clinics and hospitals in Lusaka. It takes hours for any patient to be attended to.

Everything in health is on automatic pilot, the staff are petrified of the minister who seems to have a very strong latch on State House. She cannot do any wrong, never mind how many people have died due to lapses.

Worse still, a visit to the

Cancer Hospital in Lusaka and indeed the various clinics at the UTH show that the facilities are in very bad condition, toilets are never cleaned and in many cases men and women use the same toilets, a situation that is not acceptable.

One day, those responsible will be brought to account.

SIDNEY MBOSHA.
