Congratula­tions to the Copper Queens

- ELEMIYA PHIRI, Lusaka.

Dear Editor, CONGRATULA­TIONS to the Zambia national women's soccer team otherwise known as Copper Queens for qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

This follows the Copper Queens' 2-0 resounding victory against the Atlas Lionesses of Morocco. The match was played last Tuesday at Prince Mouday EL Hassan Stadium, their own den in Rabat.

The goals came courtesy of team captain and striker Barbra Banda who netted a brace. Banda scored in the first half and in stoppage time from the penalty spot.

Zambia is in Group B together with Australia, German, and United States of America at the Paris Olympics. This is one of the toughest groups.

But I am confident that Zambia will perform well going by the pedigree of players in our team.

The Copper Queens have qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics via a 3-2 aggregate. Zambia was beaten 2-1 at home. The qualificat­ion by the Copper Queens has cheered the football fans.

Zambia went into the second leg of the final Olympic qualifier trailing by a goal. The match was not an easy one but Zambia reigned supreme by beating the hosts.

The Bruce Mwape-coached side has shown character by overturnin­g the tables through victory and ultimately qualifying for the Olympic football tournament slated for July this year to be hosted by France.

President Hakainde Hichilema has also congratula­ted the Copper Queens for qualifying for the Paris Olympic.

The Copper Queens have done one phase of the task. It is now incumbent upon the team to focus on the forthcomin­g competitio­n. Furthermor­e, the team should prepare adequately ahead of the Olympics.

The Copper Queens have made Zambia proud and a standing ovation to coach Bruce Mwape and his technical bench for the job well done.
