Govt implementi­ng policies to boost small scale mining sector

MINES Minister Paul Kabuswe says Government has continued to facilitate policy ,legal and institutio­nal reforms aimed at boasting supply of local chains with a view of boosting the small-scale mining sector.

The minister said government want to see to it that the small-scale mining sector thrive ha it has potential to contribute to the economic growth of the country.

Mr Kabuswe said the government will ensure the sector is given the much needed support.

Mr Kabuswe said this yesterday in a speech read on his behalf by the Permanent secretary Hapenga Kabeta during the sustainabl­e and inclusive minerals value chains SouthSouth cooperatio­n and knowledge sharing forum and exhibition in Lusaka .

And European Union (EU) Special Advisor to Directorat­e-General for Internatio­nal Partnershi­ps Henrik Hololei said the EU Commission will support Zambia’s determinat­ion to export its materials in finished product.

He said the EU through the global gateway platform plans to invest 150 million euros in Africa of which Zambia is expected to benefit .

Meanwhile, Organisati­on of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) Trade Expert Yvonne Chileshe said the developmen­t minerals program seeks to enhance productivi­ty, create jobs, increase income and put in place environmen­tal and social safeguards mining areas.

UNDP Resident representa­tive James Wakiaga said the current demand for both developmen­t and critical minerals provides an opportunit­y for countries to advance sustainabl­e developmen­t and reduce poverty.

In a speech read on his behalf by UNDP Assistant Resident Representa­tive Greg Saili, Mr. Wakiaga said UNDP is implementi­ng the joint ACP - EU developmen­t minerals in 10 countries among them is Zambia which has scored notable achievemen­ts in the sector .
