Govt implementing policies to boost small scale mining sector
MINES Minister Paul Kabuswe says Government has continued to facilitate policy ,legal and institutional reforms aimed at boasting supply of local chains with a view of boosting the small-scale mining sector.
The minister said government want to see to it that the small-scale mining sector thrive ha it has potential to contribute to the economic growth of the country.
Mr Kabuswe said the government will ensure the sector is given the much needed support.
Mr Kabuswe said this yesterday in a speech read on his behalf by the Permanent secretary Hapenga Kabeta during the sustainable and inclusive minerals value chains SouthSouth cooperation and knowledge sharing forum and exhibition in Lusaka .
And European Union (EU) Special Advisor to Directorate-General for International Partnerships Henrik Hololei said the EU Commission will support Zambia’s determination to export its materials in finished product.
He said the EU through the global gateway platform plans to invest 150 million euros in Africa of which Zambia is expected to benefit .
Meanwhile, Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) Trade Expert Yvonne Chileshe said the development minerals program seeks to enhance productivity, create jobs, increase income and put in place environmental and social safeguards mining areas.
UNDP Resident representative James Wakiaga said the current demand for both development and critical minerals provides an opportunity for countries to advance sustainable development and reduce poverty.
In a speech read on his behalf by UNDP Assistant Resident Representative Greg Saili, Mr. Wakiaga said UNDP is implementing the joint ACP - EU development minerals in 10 countries among them is Zambia which has scored notable achievements in the sector .
