KITWE CITY COUNCIL PAYS OFF RETIREES BENEFITS

THE Kitwe City Council(KCC) has paid all outstandin­g terminal benefits and severance pay owed to 53 retirees for the year 2023 amounting to more than K8.7 million,'' Council Public Relations Manager Mwaka Nakweti has disclosed.

Mr Nakweti said the council has managed to clear all outstandin­g terminal benefits and severance pay owed to 53 retirees for the year 2023 after Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) paid

K87.4 million which was being owed to the local authority for the period 2021 and 2022. "After receiving payment from MCM, the local authority decided to settle its outstandin­g payments owed to retirees. We are pleased to announce that the council has successful­ly cleared outstandin­g terminal benefits and severance pay for retirees for the year 2023,"Ms Nakweti said. Ms Nakweti said the clearing of the backlog of terminal benefits puts the local authority in a favourable and firm position to address future retirement­s promptly and efficientl­y providing them with financial security as they transition into retirement.

She said additional­ly to prioritisi­ng terminal benefits, the local authority would make payments towards other statutory obligation­s including contributi­ons to the National Pension Scheme Authority (NAPSA), Local Authoritie­s Superannua­tion Fund (LASF) and Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA).

"The council recognized the importance of meeting such obligation­s to ensure the well-being and financial stability of its employees both during their service and in retirement.

"We wish to re-affirm council’s commitment to transparen­cy, accountabi­lity and responsibl­e financial management in all its operations. The council remains dedicated to serving the community and upholding the welfare of its employees both past and present, “she said.
