- Patrick Chitumba

POLICE in Gweru are investigating the suspected murder of two people in separate incidents on Saturday night.

Acting Midlands provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende, confirmed the two deaths. She said investigations were underway. Asst Insp Mukwende said the first recorded sudden death occurred in the Central Business District (CBD) while the second one was reported in the light industrial area.

“We received two sudden deaths reports which took place in Gweru on Saturday evening. One body of a male adult whose age is still to be confirmed was discovered at the corner of Shurugwi turnoff and Lobengula Street. The second body of a male adult in his early 20s was found in a ditch close to the Vehicle Inspection Department (VID) in the light industrial area,” said Asst Insp Mukwende.

She said the first body has since been identified but the next of kin were still to be notified.

“We are, however, appealing to members of the public to come and identify the second body that was found near VID. The two bodies are at Gweru Provincial Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem,” Asst Insp Mukwende said.

Vendors at Kombayi Market near VID said the body found near their vending area was half naked with a deep cut on the head.

Meanwhile, Asst Insp Mukwende said they had also received a drowning report. She said a man drowned while fishing in a dam at White Waters Resort, which is located 18km from Gweru, on Saturday.
