A MAN from Gokwe allegedly fatally assaulted a 25-year-old Mangwe man while defending himself after the deceased and three other people attacked him for visiting their home area.

Prosper Gumbo (32) allegedly attacked Mr Nlisi Moyo using an iron rod and he died on the spot.

This was after Mr Moyo and his colleagues had confronted Gumbo on why he had visited their home area before ordering him to leave, resulting in the altercation.

The incident occurred at Nope Cocktail Bar in Madabe area on Sunday night. Gumbo yesterday appeared before Plumtree magistrate Mr Livard Philemon facing murder charges.

He was remanded in custody to August 15.

Prosecuting, Mrs Rose Sibanda said after committing the offence, Gumbo proceeded to Madabe Police Station and handed himself over to the police.

“Mr Moyo and his friends were drinking beer at Nope Cocktail Bar in Madabe area around 1AM when they confronted Gumbo who was in the area to visit a relative. They demanded to know what he was doing in their home area and they ordered him to leave.

“Gumbo ignored them but they persisted which resulted in a fight. The men teamed up against Gumbo and started assaulting him and in response he armed himself with an iron bar and started fighting back,” she said.

Mrs Sibanda said Gumbo struck Mr Moyo with the iron bar on his head and continued beating him with the weapon until he lost consciousness.

She said Mr Moyo died on the spot after sustaining severe head injuries as a result of the attack.

Gumbo fled from the scene after Mr Moyo’s companions tried to assault him further.

“Gumbo later proceeded to Madabe Police Base where he reported what had transpired and handed himself over to the police resulting in his arrest,” said the prosecutor. — @DubeMatutu.
