Shabanie Mine piles pressure on Blanket

- Lovemore Zigara Gweru Bureau

FORMER Premiership outfit Shabanie Mine maintained pressure on log leaders Blanket Mine after dispatching ZRP Beitbridge 2-0 at Dulivhadzimu Stadium in a Zifa Central Soccer League (CSL) encounter.

The asbestos miners got their goals courtesy of a brace by exciting striker Terrence Rukweza.

The win took Shabanie’s points tally to 38 and saw them occupying pole position for 24 hours before Blanket Mine regained top spot following a 2-1 win over neighbours Jessie Mine.

Shabanie Mine coach Tendai Chikuni was over the moon following the win but warned his charges against complacency as the league goes towards the home straight.

“I am happy to have picked up points, especially in Beitbridge where most teams have come back empty handed.

This goes to show that as a team we have character and going forward we need to keep the momentum if we are to win the championship,” said Chikuni.

“This is the critical stage of the championship and any slip up will cost us and I am therefore working on the psychological aspect of the team.

I have also warned them against complacency because since the second half started we are now the team to beat.”

Elsewhere Tongogara survived a second half scare and had to come from a goal down to beat struggling Gweru United 2 – 1 at Battlefields to keep within shouting distance of the championship.

The army side has so far amassed 35 points and trail the log leaders by four points.

Whawha continued with their resurgence by edging Chrome Stars 1-0 to record their fourth consecutive win, a result that powered them into fifth place on the log.
