Form 4 Njube High girls ‘caught’ in beer binge

- Nqobile Tshili

SEVEN Form Four girl pupils at Njube High School were allegedly caught drinking alcohol on the school’s premises and some of them have stopped reporting for class since they were busted.

The seven girls were rounded up by the school authorities after one of the school’s prefects caught them drinking “hot stuff ” in the toilets and alerted teachers.

School authorities are said to have ordered the pupils to come with their parents. Some of the pupils did not return to school afterwards since they were caught last week on Monday.

On Friday the school’s headmaster, who identified himself only as Mr Ndebele, confirmed the incident.

He said he could not provide more details on the matter as he was not cleared to speak to the Press.

“As you may know I wasn’t cleared to speak to the Press, but investigations are underway,” said Mr Ndebele.

He referred further questions to Bulawayo Provincial Education Director (PED) Mr Dan Moyo.

The PED said the pupils face disciplinary measures and would also receive counselling if the allegations against them are true.

“This matter has not reached my office. But if it occurred the pupils will be disciplined as well as counselled,” said Mr Moyo.

Sources at the school said the girls were found with different alcoholic brands.

“The seven of them were found with all sorts of alcohol. It is worrying that these children are supposed to be writing their public examinations this week but are busy destroying their lives,” said a source.

The source said the school was having difficulties with pupils, especially from child-headed families. “There’re children who stay alone because their parents and guardians are in the diaspora. They have the extra cash which they end up using to buy alcohol. What those girls did is just a reflection of what they do at home. Who is buying alcohol for them? Are shops selling beer to children?” asked the source.

Last year, there was an outcry when an increasing number of pupils were holding Vuzu parties where they would get drunk and indulge in sex orgies. Some of the pupils were using sex enhancing concoctions that experts said might result in the children suffering from erectile dysfunction in the future. — @nqotshili
