- Tanaka Mrewa

The Zimbabwe Teachers Association (ZIMTA) and Eversharp have donated exercise books, pens, rulers mealiemeal, beans, sanitary pads and toiletries to Tsholotsho floods victims.

The donations worth $6 000 were handed over to the beneficiaries on Tuesday.

ZIMTA national executive member Mr Tapson Nganunu Sibanda, who is also the provincial chairperson for Matabeleland North, said they were touched when they heard that 600 pupils were affected by the floods.

“We don’t want to disintegrate families. They have to move with their parents wherever they are moved to,” he said.

The affected pupils are from Mahlaba and Mathupula primary schools and are being accommodated at Sipepa primary school.

Mr Sibanda whose organisation donated goods worth $3 000, said they wanted to ensure that the affected pupils do not lose out much on their studies.

Eversharp and Softex donated 7 000 pens, 4 000 rulers and tissues all worth $3 000.

Mr Julian Mbono, the Sales executive for Eversharp said the company was saddened by the plight of the flood victims.

“This was our small way of assisting the affected pupils to enable them to continue with their learning,” he said.

Students from Tsholotsho High school also donated food and sanitary wear to their counterparts affected by the floods.

Ntombiyemini Ngwenya, a Form Six pupil at the school, said it was saddening to see some children in such a dire situation.

“It’s so heart-breaking to learn that there are some children who are living under such conditions. We hope that they will be relocated to a better place so that they can have a normal life again,” she said.

*The Chronicle which has been co-ordinating donations to assist Tsholotsho floods victims will today hand over the donations to the beneficiaries at Sipepa in Tsholotsho. Most affected families now urgently require cement and bricks to build houses since most of their homes were completely destroyed by the floods. Those with donations can contact the DA for Tsholotsho or Provincial Adminstrator for Matabeleland North province.—@tannytkay.
