Aid from Spain a boost to Command agric

-

EDITOR — If the Command Agriculture programme was ‘‘meaningless’’ and ‘‘doomed for failure’’ as some unpatriotic critics shamelessly say, the international farming community was never going to assist and take part in this great initiative.

In a show of approval, appreciation and acknowledgement, some of the world’s leading agriculture economies are beginning to take part indirectly through their generous provision and mechanical assistance.

Spain has come on board supplying centre pivots worth millions of dollars in an irrigation aid package set to benefit farmers and Zimbabwe at large.

To receive such a major boost from a country like Spain is good for our agricultural sector and good overall for the economy.

As we now prepare for the wheat initiative of the command programme to take place, it is important for government to ensure that farmers are organised and that inputs and equipment get to them in time.

I hope that a review of the first phase of the Command Agriculture programme has been undertaken and the shortcomings are being addressed as we move forward.

The nation is highly expectant for a successful programme and, with correct administration, this is certainly attainable. Felix Zonke, Harare
