Zim netball retains boss
LETICIA Chipandu was re-elected Zimbabwe Netball Association (Zina) president along with her executive at last week’s annual general meeting held in Harare.
She heads an executive consisting of vice-president Handisen Tembo, secretary-general Barbara Rice, Vina Maseko (organising secretary for Southern Region), Alex Masimba (organising secretary for Northern Region), Petronela Gonye (treasurer) and Agnes Chiroodza (fixtures secretary).
“This is a big honour for us as the executive considering that there were challengers, but at the end of the day we all returned to our previous offices. This shows that people have faith in us and we are going to work tirelessly to ensure that we don’t disappoint. What we need to do is to perfect our skills as the administration so that we reach greater heights,” said Chipandu.
She said there were a number of plans the executive is hoping to achieve, among them the decentralisation of netball in the country.
“We want to revive regional leagues in the country so that we can have more teams in the Super League. From previous years, we have realised that some regions are not that active when it comes to the sport. That’s why you find some players from Bulawayo, Matabeleland North and Matabeleland South going to Harare and Midlands because that’s where there are competitive league games. Once we do that, we will have a base for Super League teams,” she said.
“We also have some workshops lined up to train coaches and umpires because they also play a pivotal role in developing the game. From there we will meet with provincial chairpersons and administrators to map the way forward.” — @khumzallen.
