The Other Side

-

Deuteronomy 20.6. “Has anyone planted a vineyard and not begun to enjoy it? Let him go home, or he may die in battle and someone else enjoy it.”

I have a regular group of people that comment each time I post something, so today I received an interesting request. The person said to me “when I started reading your pieces I was in a bad state, I have since found myself again, and that being the case, can you begin to write about things that can help happy people.”

I laughed. We entered into a heated debate; upon reflection I suppose they had a point. We concentrate so much on the issues of life that tend to pull us down, yet there is another side of our lives that brings us immense happiness and joy regardless of the circumstances.

The business of sustenance and survival takes so much of our time that we sometimes lose track of the other areas of life that we should be enjoying. God created the earth, not only to create the means to live but also to be enjoyed.

We sometimes believe that enjoyment comes from things that require money, yet there are so many things that can become a part of a regular routine that just require effort. For a while now, I have been trying to find the time to just take a walk, absorb the sights and sounds and enjoy the splendour of this earth that we call home.

When was the last time you just sat back and watched television? It’s not always recommended but once in a while it’s a great habit to pursue. I am amazed at some of the programs they flight, from the wonders of modern engineering to the splendour of the Serengeti plains.

If you are someone who enjoys music and has been given the gift of song, listening and singing along to music can be a great way to pass time. Not long ago I took up reading as a serious hobby, what wonders one can discover in books, the sheer joy of learning and being taught by great luminaries. For those who enjoy sport it could be a game of soccer or a game of squash or golf, the time spent on these activities can be so joyful it becomes addictive.

The Lord gave us so many gifts, the gift of just being able to enjoy these things is something we should cherish. We are sometimes so caught up in our world of sorrow that we forget that there is so much more to life.

Not long ago a friend invited me to their house for lunch with two other friends. He told me that weekends were his cook days. The meal was great and from the presentation of the food I could clearly taste that this was a hobby he truly enjoyed and had mastered, that brought him joy and was also a great way to spend time.

Too much time devoid of activity and company can sometimes be an evil we must avoid. In these extreme moments of solitude, the mind will wander and can sometimes take you to dangerous places that may be difficult to come out of.

The Lord intended that we be engaged in activity, be it work, leisure or worship, these things are meant to fill our world. Take time to enjoy the things you have been gifted with, things that have just been given to you that can make your life all the more better. Yes doom and gloom may always be a part of the daily struggle but within those dark clouds the sun can sometime penetrate, find the things you like and enjoy them.
