Goings on in SA Parly unAfrican

-

EDITOR — I agree with the sentiments allegedly raised by former Tanzanian president Benjamin Mkapa that the goings-on in the South African parliament are not only unAfrican, but are also a danger to upholding of democratic principles in that country.

Parliament is a central pillar of any democracy mandated to pass laws that ensure that the other arms of government — the Executive and Judiciary operate smoothly.

What continues to be very disturbing are the actions of the opposition parties, especially the Democratic Alliance. Why should the people of South Africa be subjected to nefarious issues raised by its leader Mmusi Maimane day-in, day-out? When are the people of South Africa expected to work, when Maimane is either filing court papers against President Zuma and/or addressing Press conferences.

He has just said he will personally lay criminal charges against President Zuma, as his list of grandstanding actions goes on. South African courts are now inundated with frivolous lawsuits from opposition parties.

Africa Day saw the know-it-all Mmusi Aloysias Maimane flying to Zambia with the aim of giving moral support to the embattled opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema.

Maimane wanted to use his influence to bear on the Zambian courts, but he got a rude shock when Zambian authorities deported him.

To Maimane, this was proof that Zambia was undemocratic. The whole opposition outfit in South Africa want to give the impression that they are the custodians of democracy.

What is surprising is the silence from the region regarding the Maimane-Zambia saga. Non-interference is an important principle not only within the Sadc, but the African Union.

If Julius Malema and company were expelled from the ANC for wanting to effect illegal regime in Botswana, why should there be this silence from the region?

In Malema’s case, the responsibility was with the ANC, but there was condemnation from major analysts in the Sadc region.

Whose responsibility then is it to rein in Maimane and his white owned DA since he also wants to call on all opposition parties in the region to work together on issues of mutual interest, especially illegal regime change?

Maimane and others like him are the stain on the liberation movements and their governments, whose desire is to capture power using the ill-gotten wealth from their funders - white monopoly capital.

Sadly, some in the ANC have bought into the state capture charade, forgetting what happened since Jan van Riebeeck landed in Cape Town, and also turning a blind eye to the naked truth that apartheid was the most evil way of state capture. Nomagugu M’simang, Via email
