BULAWAYO, Monday, June 26, 1967 — Queens clinched the Matabeleland First League rugby title at Hartsfield yesterday when, in the style of true championships, they thoroughly trounced Police by 45 points (six goals), four tries and a dropped goal to 14 (a goal and two tries).
With only one match still to be played against BAC on July 15 — Queens began yesterday’s game at cracking pace, by half time were ahead 24-3.
Police showed little more enterprise in the second period but were no match for the efficient Queens combination.
Scorers for Queens’s were — tries: Watson 3 tries, Cooper 2, Muir — head and Alexander. Youtt landed a dropped goal and converted six tries.
Wilson, Sawyer and Cunnison scored tries for Police with Sawyer adding a penalty and a conversion.
In the late game BAC turned the tables on last year’s champions, Old Miltonians, who earlier this season beat the boys in green.
After leading 3-0 at the interval through a try by Jimmy Studholme, BAC took a firm grip of the game in the second session and scored two more tries to run out winners 9-0.
This win by BAC makes them almost certain of the runners’ up spot in the league, and also puts them in the running to represent Matabeleland in the Globe and Phoenix tournament at Que Que in August.
Queens and BAC are the only two unbeaten teams in the second round of the First League competition, and winners of this round play in the Globe and Phoenix.
BAC always looked the better team yesterday, particularly in the second half when they held a territorial advantage for most of the time.
Their second half tries came from Peppy Lundt and Ken Wilkinson.
OMs came back a little in the closing minutes of the game, but dropped passes robbed them at least one scoring opportunity.
