AMAVENI High School beat defending champions Mbizo High School 3-2 to lift the AN Hwingwiri Invitational Soccer Tournament at Amaveni Stadium.

The tournament is in honour of the late Kwekwe mayor Alluwis Zachariah Hwingwiri whose remains are interred at the Midlands Provincial Heroes’ Acre.

This year’s tournament which is in its third edition was graced by former Warriors leftback Harlington Shereni who gave tips to budding players.

Tournament coordinator, Tich Hwingwiri said inviting former football greats is a way of motivating the youngsters to take football seriously.

“We invited former football stars so that we can motivate the youngsters to view football as a sustainable career which can earn them a living.

“We want the football legends to motivate the youngsters,” he said.

Hwingwiri said the football tournament is also a way of honouring heroes who contributed to the development of Kwekwe like the late mayor Hwingwiri.

He said the tournament is going to be a permanent feature on the Kwekwe footballing calendar with plans to expand the tournament if funds permit.

Shereni hailed the gesture by the organisers of the tournament and called on coaches to take advantage of such platforms to identify new talent.

“This is a great initiative by the organisers and going foward I urge coaches to support such causes through talent identification. I am glad to be here to share my experiences with the youngsters.

“Some of the players I watched today have what it takes to play at the highest level if given the proper mentoring,” said Shereni.

Apart from Shereni, the tournament has also been graced by former football greats such as Stanford “Stix” Mtizwa, Desmond Maringwa, Kennedy Nagoli and the late Paul “Locomotive” Gundani. — @ lavuzigara1
