Solar power ideal for rural clinics

-

EDITOR — The story headlined “Solar for rural clinics project gets gov nod” refers.

It will be good for rural clinics to use solar systems as electricity is expensive especially when it is being used by a hospital.

Solar power systems derive clean, pure energy from the sun. Installing solar panels on your clinics helps combat greenhouse gas emissions and reduces our collective dependence on fossil fuel.

Traditional electricity is sourced from fossil fuels such as coal and natural gas.

Solar energy reduces monthly bills of electricity which saves money.

A medical institution needs a reliable and convenient energy source to cater for patients on life support machines which rely on electricity or any other form of energy to function.

As said by the Ministry of Health and Child Care, Director of Family Health, Dr Bernard Madzima, maternal health services are difficult to perform at night especially if there is insufficient light. Therefore, there is need for sufficient light for a successful and uncomplicated delivery.

In some rural hospitals, areas nurses use candles, which do not provide adequate light in and is not safe as it might result in an accident.

We thank the Ministry of Health and Child Care for spearheading this initiative which will make service delivery in rural clinics a lot easier and reduce maternal deaths.

However, the solar energy has to be backed by rural electrification because of its dependency on weather.

Forward ever with developing rural communities! Lovender Muza, Greendale
