BULAWAYO, Tuesday, September 1, 1992 — Bulawayo residents will have to make do with less water if the city council approves proposals by the Future Water and Water Action Committee to tighten water rationing measures.
According to the latest council minutes, the committee recommended that people in individually metered houses and flats be restricted to 300 litres a day.
Other flats and cottages, multi-purpose buildings with bulk water meters comprising residential flats, offices and shops would be allowed 180 litres a day.
Churches, restaurants, commercial consumers, schools, colleges, welfare organisations, other institutions and non-water based industries would be restricted to 40 percent of their average consumption for six months ending November 1992.
Hotels would be permitted 65 percent of their average consumption during the same period. Hospitals would be restricted to 75 percent of their average consumption during the six-month period.
Consumers of reclaimed water would be given a ration of 50 percent of their average consumption during the June to November 1992 period and sports clubs and the Bulawayo-Esigodini Rural Council would be restricted to 30 percent, with water-based industries allowed to use 50 percent.
Penalties for over-use of water will remain the same.
