Sport in schools a necessity
EDITOR — Sporting legends in the country have not been active in using their talents to groom the next generation of sports persons inspiring them to become legends in their right.
This may have been caused by lack of motivation and support to begin training the next generation in areas they are specified in.
Some use sports as a tool to break isolation, some nations are aware that sport can be used as a vital tool in fighting terrorism while sport can also be used to fight racism.
It’s good to note that locally our sporting heroines like former swimming sensation Kirsty Coventry are using sport as a tool to empower children and in the process building stronger and safer communities in Zimbabwe.
It is vital that we emphasise that training routines should consider the development of the whole young person to maximise their potential.
Parents have to take part in supporting their children financially, morally and even emotionally in pursuing their dreams.
Not everyone is academically gifted so educational institutions should accommodate those who are gifted sportwise so that the pupils won’t give up on their dreams because they are afraid of being laughed at in class.
The best way to go is establishing schools that are specifically for sports for people to familiarise with their sporting activities and to get enough training which prepares them to explore the world of sport.
We hope the Kirsty Coventry Academy will be a massive success and will fulfil the dream of our former swimming sensation. Felix Zonke, Harare
