Taxi driver ‘rapes’ passenger

- Codelia Mondela

A TAXI driver employed by AB Super Motors in Bulawayo allegedly raped a 22-year-old woman whom he had offered a lift.

Daunwell Ncube (32) of Mpopoma suburb allegedly locked the car windows and doors before raping the woman.

A court heard how he gave the woman a lift after she clashed with her friends at Mqombothi Club.

Unidentified male patrons had approached the man and asked him to drive her home.

Ncube yesterday denied raping the woman before West Commonage magistrate Mr Lungile Ncube saying they had consensual sex on August 7.

He pleaded not guilty to rape and Mr Ncube remanded him in custody to September 20.

“If you want bail you can apply at the High Court,” said Mr Ncube.

Prosecuting, Mr Petros Shoko said the taxi driver raped the woman around 4AM in Kelvin North.

“The woman failed to recognise the colour and registration number of the car since it was dark, but noticed two passengers in the car who disembarked in Pumula and Nkulumane,” he said.

“The man continued driving along Masiyephambili Road, turned into Kelvin North, drove a few metres and stopped.”

The court heard that he forcibly fondled the woman, pulled up her skirt and raped her once without protection.

After the alleged rape, he proceeded to drop the woman at her place of residence and went away.

The matter came to light after the woman narrated the matter to her manager who advised her to report the issue to the police.

It was not clear how the police traced the taxi driver.—@ MondelaC
