Goals galore in CSL

- Lovemore Zigara in Gweru

GOALS rained in matches involving championship chasing teams in the Zifa Central Soccer League (CSL) with leaders Tongogara and third-on-the-table Nichrut scoring eleven goals between them in weekend fixtures.

Tongogara massacred Vumbachikwe 6-0, getting all the half-a-dozen goals in the second half.

A hattrick by Delight Dhimbo, goals apiece by Simon Shanga, Costa Chimbeva and Paul Ngwenya was all Tongogara needed to secure maximum points and maintain a three-point lead at the summit of the log standings.

Tongogara coach Kelvin Maphosa was over the moon with the way his charges performed and said it shows that his team has the character to last the distance in the championship race which is now in the twilight stages.

“I am happy with the way things panned out especially after we had not scored in the first half but the boys responded well and scored those goals. This is a hallmark of a good team and it is such character which can only lead us where we want to be at the end of the season,” said Maphosa.

Nichrut’s fine run at Peak Mine Stadium continued with the Shurugwi based side hammering a hapless Silo United 5-0. John Nyikadzino’s Nichrut was also in uncompromising mood with former Dynamos and Highlanders striker Jacob Muzokomba leading the onslaught with a brace, while Asani Nhongo, Kudakwashe Sibanda and the exciting Bastos Chihowa completed the rout.

The resounding win gave Nyikadzino a reason to believe after his side seemed to have removed the foot from the accelerator pedal after the first half of the season which they reached leading the standings.
