BULAWAYO, Thursday, November 9, 1967 — Traffic jammed outside the Chronicle building yesterday as crowds gathered to see how many teeth Demetrious Kutalianos (53) would lose.

The strongman from Crete positioned himself squarely, looked menacingly at three cars roped one behind the other in front of him, and grunted.

He placed a cloth round the end of the rope, fastened his jaws firmly around it and heaved. The Opel Olympia, Ford Cosair and Austin Cambridge moved forward slightly.

Gurgling sounds came from the black clothed and belted muscleman as he pulled the cars 15ft with his teeth.

African bystanders gawked and laughed. Others cheered. Mr Kutalianos acknowledged the applause.

His teeth were intact and he bent over to recover his breath. It was a sample of the feats he has performed all over the world to prove that health and fitness should not be dictated to by age.

In the 36 years he has demonstrated his abilities, he has learnt physical fitness form former heavyweight boxing champion, Primo Carnera, and yoga from a Tibetan lama.

This Saturday he will perform at 8PM at a hall in Bulawayo after which he will continue his travels in Africa.

Next year he plans to return to Salisbury, where he hopes to open a gymnasium. Things have not always gone according to plan for Demetrious.

Some years ago he was pulling a tractor with a rope between when the tractor driver slammed on the brakes. The strongman lost several teeth. Demetrious shuns liqour but smokes about six cigarettes a day.

He is married with two daughters and a son.
