Network operators told to integrate mobile money services

- Kiyapili Sibanda

THE Government has ordered telecommunication companies to improve connectivity and integration of mobile money services across all networks.

Zimbabwe has got three major telecommunication companies - Econet, NetOne and Telecel.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, Engineer Samuel Kundishora, said increased competition in the telecoms sector should drive players to come up with innovations that are customer driven.

He said his ministry was concerned about consumer reliance on a single supplier of critical services like mobile money services.

“Through competition we are expecting to see more and more innovation that is customer driven. It is of great concern to us as Government that a lot of people rely on a single supplier for critical services such as mobile money services.

“The OneMoney platform is therefore a welcome addition for the Zimbabwean consumer,” said Eng Kundishora.

“I now implore operators to engage with issues to do with connectivity and integration of mobile money services across all networks.”

Eng Kundishora urged Zimbabweans to embrace mobile money services as they have now become a global trend platform. Meanwhile, Eng Kundishora challenged NetOne’s OneMoney facility to include rural and underserved areas in terms of financial inclusion and developing strategies that ensures all citizens have access to the product.—@Kiyaz_Cool
