Top Byo swimmers for Mat’land gala

TOP city swimmers are expected at the Bulawayo City Pool for the Matabelela­nd Amateur Swimming Gala this evening.

The swimmers are from local clubs Petra Swimming Academy, Zambezi Tigers, Barracudas, Falcon, Crusaders, School of Swimming, Dolphins and Penguins.

Junior and senior swimmers will take to the pool in an attempt to secure qualifying times for the African Swimming Confederat­ion (CANA) Zone 4 championsh­ips to be held in South Africa this year.

CANA is the African mother body for swimming and Zone 4 comprises southern African countries that include Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Matabelela­nd Swimming Board press and liaison officer Thomas Werrett said they expect a competitiv­e pool with swimmers out to improve their times ahead of the African showpiece.

“We expect the meet to be very competitiv­e. The gala will offer swimmers a chance to improve their times from last year. We’re excited with the level of competitio­n we have witnessed of late and we urge aquatic sport lovers to come and cheer the young swimmers, whom we believe will one day represent the country proudly at regional and internatio­nal events,” said Werret.

Swimmers will take part in multiple events, including the 50m butterfly, 100m backstroke, 100m freestyle, 200m individual medley, 50m breaststro­ke and 800m freestyle. — @innocentsk­izoe
