THE Bulawayo Athletics Board (BAB) will hold its annual general meeting at White City Stadium tomorrow to review the 2017 season and craft the 2018 calendar.

BAB chairman Manuel Mpofu said: “We had a fruitful 2017 and managed to secure offices at White City Stadium, bringing great convenience to our operations as we now had a central place where people could find us”.

The 2018 season begins with the provincial cross country championships that will be held at Luveve High School on January 13 followed by a track and field event at White City the next day.

The cross country event will be used to select a squad to represent the province at the inter-provincial cross country championships slated for Hillside Dams on February 10.

Mpofu said the second cross country event is scheduled for Mpopoma Park on January 21.

One of the highlights of athletics in the region will be the regional track and field championships that involve countries such as Zambia, Botswana and South Africa on May 19 and 20.

On the continental front, Mpofu said the draw card this year would be the IAAF Africa Senior Championships scheduled for Lagos, Nigeria in August, and local athletes have to work hard to qualify.

There will also be the IAAF World Under-20 Championships pencilled for July in Finland, which Mpofu said would provide a platform for young athletes to gauge their abilities on the world stage.

The Old Mutual Nkulumane Fun Run has also been expanded to include the half marathon in addition to the 10km and 5km runs. — @innocentskizoe
