Brother-freeing ‘bouncer’ jailed

- Nothabo Nyathi

A “BOUNCER” from Jambezi outside Victoria Falls who was arrested after he allegedly overpowered three armed cops causing his younger brother to escape from custody, has been sentenced to four months in prison.

The police officers told the court that they failed to arrest Mthokozisi Sibindi who was wanted for assault after his ‘bouncer’ brother Cabangani Sibindi (23) pushed them.

Constable Kelvin Ncube said they were overpowered by Cabangani who is a bit heavy (literally meaning big) as they tried to cuff his younger brother Mthokozisi.

Cabangani of Masikili Village 24, pleaded not guilty to a charge of obstructing the course of justice when he appeared before Victoria Falls magistrate Ms Lindiwe Maphosa on Friday.

He said the cops were lying as he only had a conversation with one of them, while two others were holding Mthokozisi who suddenly broke free from their grip and fled.

The magistrate sentenced Cabangani to four months in prison suspending two months on condition he does not commit a similar offence. He will serve two months in jail. Prosecuting Mr Listen Nare said Cabangani blocked the police from arresting his brother.

“Cabangani unlawfully and intentionally obstructed the course of justice, knowing that Mthokozisi was a suspect for assault and was under arrest. He caused him to escape as he pushed three police officers who wanted to handcuff the suspect,” said the prosecutor. — @nyathi_nothabo
