Five-man gang kills snooker champ
A FILABUSI man was allegedly killed by a five-man gang that was dismayed by his winning streak in a snooker game while a granny from the same village was killed by an unknown assailant while she was sleeping.
Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Philisani Ndebele said police were investigating the two murders which occurred at Masibambaneni Village in Silalatshani Ward on Sunday.
He said Xolisani Dube (32) died on the spot after he was struck with a brick on the head while Sevy Moyo died on the following day while admitted to Filabusi District Hospital.
Her skull had been cracked open by an unknown attacker.
He said one of the suspects who was part of the five men gang had been arrested while Moyo’s assailant remained unknown. “I can confirm that we are investigating two murder cases which occurred in Silalatshani Ward in Filabusi area on Sunday at 10PM and 11PM respectively. In the first incident Xolisani Dube was playing a snooker game with five others at a bottle store in Silalatshani Business Centre. A misunderstanding ensued between them and they ganged up on Dube and struck him with a brick on the head before fleeing the scene.
“These five men are aged between 17 and 31 years-old and so far we have arrested one suspect who is assisting police with investigations,” he said.
Insp Ndebele said in the second incident Moyo retired to bed around 8PM in her bedroom hut leaving her door unlocked while her daughter, Ms Nobukhosi Moyo slept in a separate hut.
He said around 11PM Nobukhosi heard some noises coming from her mother’s bedroom hut and went to inquire. “Nobukhosi found her mother’s bedroom hut door open while she was groaning in pain on the floor. Moyo was bleeding and part of her brain was exposed. The object which was used to attack her is unknown.
“Moyo was rushed to Filabusi Hospital where she died on the following day around 1PM from injuries sustained during the attack. Her assailant fled from the scene before anyone could see him. As police we appeal to anyone with information on his identity or information that could lead to the arrest of the four other men to contact any police station,” he said.
Insp Ndebele said people had to stop fighting over petty issues while he also urged members of the public to desist from staying outside their homes till late. He urged parents to monitor youngsters as most were being involved in criminal activities at night.
The local leader in Silalatshani Ward where the two incidents occurred said villagers had been left shocked by the two deaths which occurred in one village over the same night.
He said Dube got into a misunderstanding with his snooker mates as he kept winning.
“Dube kept winning and when he demanded his money that’s when they attacked him. Sevy Moyo is suspected to have been attacked by her son-in-law as they were having a dispute.—@DubeMatutu
