BULAWAYO, Friday, March 15, 1968 — The new headmistress of Townsend School, Bulawayo, is Mrs Celia Davies. She will take up her new post on September 1.
Born in Bulawayo, she went to Eveline High School and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree at Cape Town University in 1933 and the secondary school teacher’s certificate the following year.
Appointed to Eveline High School in 1935, after her marriage, she taught at other Bulawayo schools.
In December 1963, Mrs Davies was appointed an established officer and has been principal English teacher at Eveline since 1958. She has also acted as deputy headmistress. In Gwelo, Mr NM Benkenstein, a former deputy headmaster of Guinea Fowl School, is returning to the school as headmaster.
He was born at King Williamstown and matriculated from Dale College. He graduated with a BA from Rhodes University College in 1940 and was awarded a UED the next year.
He taught at Michael House and Jeppe High School before being appointed to Churchill School in July, 1951.
In January 1960, Mr Benkenstein was appointed deputy headmaster of Guinea Fowl School and served there until his appointment as headmaster of Cranborne Boys High School in January, 1964.
He is keenly interested in sport and is the head of the High Schools’ Association, member-in-charge of Cricket in the Mashonaland area. He has three sons, the eldest being a member of the Rhodesia Nuffield cricket team
