Vic Falls roads need repair
EDITOR — Recent incessant rains which pounded Victoria Falls and the surrounding areas left a lot of gullies in the Chinotimba suburb thereby exposing the local authority’s engineering pedigree.
Most roads in the suburb were washed away leaving ratepayers stranded or using longer alternative routes to and from work.
One tourist visiting the suburb recently remarked that if the issue of storm drains is not properly addressed one day residents will wake up to find themselves in the gorges, having been swept away in their sleep.
Environmental geomorphology clearly spells out that a lot of storm drainage channels and calverts are needed in the suburb given that Chinotimba lies close to the cliff face overlooking the Victoria Falls gorge.
From an environmentalist point of view, multiple storm drains should be built from the hospital right across to the industrial sites.
Storm drains will reduce a lot of overland flow which are responsible for destroying roads and threatening to destroy houses. The situation is better in the Mkosana residential area because the land there is of low gradient.
I was stunned to observe that a construction company is dumping rubble and mounds of sand on all the damaged roads using trucks in the suburb without spreading it creating an ugly scene of the resort area. It would be ideal if the mounds of sand heaped randomly around are spread and compacted to allow pedestrians and vehicles to travel safely.
Do something urgently about please. Victor Sibanda, Victoria Falls.
