Gwanda University takes part in Zusa games

MATABELELA­ND South-based Gwanda State University made its maiden appearance at the annual Zimbabwe Universiti­es’ Sports Associatio­n (Zusa) Cluster One Games that kicked off at the University of Zimbabwe on Thursday.

GSU has five teams representi­ng the institutio­n in the annual Games that are set to end tomorrow.

According to Zusa’s marketing officer Sibonile Madhodha, the Games brought together 14 universiti­es in the country.

The Universiti­es are battling it out in seven sporting discipline­s namely basketball, football, handball, hockey, darts, volleyball and karate.

“The National University of Science and Technology (Nust) will be eager to retain their basketball championsh­ip which they have won on three consecutiv­e occasions but will face stiff competitio­n from the hosts,” said Madhodha.

Nust basketball team are coached by Mxolisi Ndlovu who said they are geared for the competitio­n.

“As usual we will be competitiv­e, we have respect for our opponents but are ready to defend the title,” said Ndlovu.

Other institutio­ns participat­ing at the sport meet are Africa University (AU), Bindura University of Science Education (BUSE), Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT), Catholic University in Zimbabwe (CUZ), Great Zimbabwe University (GZU), Harare Institute of Technology (HIT), Lupane State Univesity (LSU), Midlands State University (MSU), Women’s University in Africa (WUA), University of Zimbabwe (UZ), Zimbabwe Ezekiel Guti University (ZEGU) and Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU).
