BULAWAYO, Thursday, April 11, 1968 — Early this year Raylton Road Runners’ Club members got together and printed and distributed 500 brochures advertising the Annual Matopos 33-Miler Race at Easter.
The 500 names and addresses came from the 1967 Comrades Marathon results.
Raylton RRC learnt later that their event clashed with the South African championships. There will, however, be some 30-odd competitors in this year’s Bulawayo event, which commences at 6AM from approximately half a mile from the Moth Shrine in the Matopos on Saturday.
The course takes the competitors out around the Circular Drive, past Rhodes’ Grave and Maleme Dam turn-offs. The course rejoins the road back to Bulawayo, turning left at 23rd Avenue, right at Plumtree Road, left at Manchester Road, right at London Road and left towards Raylton Club.
The first competitors should pass the Retreat Shopping Centre at approximately 9.30AM. All competitors finishing the race inside the maximum time of six hours will receive an attractive certificate and small wooden shield with an engraved silver plate.
The General Manager of the Railways and Mrs Wright will present a very attractive selection of cups and trophies in the main hall immediately after the last competitor has finished.
Competitors will be wearing numbers corresponding with the number of times they have entered before; i.e. 100 range the first time, 200 range the second time, etc
One competitor will be wearing number 600, Archie Jeffrey, who has competed every year since the race was inaugurated.
