Let’s reward our former sporting greats
EDITOR — I hope an award of former sporting greats will be set up. It is good that today’s sporting greats have an opportunity to win awards.
Although they were a few awards in the past, they did not reward much unlike today.
If today’s sporting heroes’ are bringing glory, let us make it up for yesteryear stars who also brought glory but who for most, did not get the opportunity to be handsomely rewarded. This would also enable them to be remembered and today’s generation would know about their achievements especially those who might not be aware, of some or most of them.
The ones who are still alive can be honoured in person. Those that have died can have their families receiving their honours on their behalf.
Some have heard, some might not have heard, while some have heard and might have seen the former yesteryear greats.
All the same how nice would it be to see such former sporting stars like George Shaya, Proud “Kilimanjaro” Chinembiri, Langton “Schoolboy” Tinago, Stix MacLoud, Alfonso Zvenyika, Nick Price, Tendai Chimusasa, Elijah Mujaji, Byron, Wayne and Cara Black, Kirsty Coventry, Mark Marabini, Andy and Grant Flower, Richard Tsimba and many others receiving their award.
We can also reward the teams that once brought us memorable achievements like the Golden Girls and the Caps United team that won the Castle Cup five times in a row.
We may bask in the present glories but we should not forget that we once basked in the past glories. Farai “Mshasha” Chisango, Mutorashanga
