BULAWAYO, Tuesday, May 21, 1968 — Seventeen people, four of them Europeans, appeared at Salisbury Magistrate’s Court today charged with offences under the dangerous drugs regulations, which followed what a police spokesman later described as “the biggest drug sweep ever in Salisbury.

The magistrate, Mr Rex Killick, told one of the offenders: “This type of offence is becoming extremely prevalent in Salisbury.

“It is spreading like wildfire among the younger people of this town and it is the duty of these courts to stamp it out as soon as possible.”

He congratulated the investigating officer in the cases, Patrol Officer Christopher Black, for his work.

He said he worked his way into a group of people in Salisbury who consumed drugs, and lived among them without taking drugs.

Ten people were sentenced today and the other seven were remanded until Friday.

A European, Wayne Pollard, of 61 Clyde Road, Eastlea, was fined £40 after pleading guilty to being in possession of a total of 19 twists of dagga.

Three Coloureds who pleaded guilty to possessing dagga were fined £25, £20 and £25 respectively. A Coloured was fined £10 for supplying dagga. A European, William Urquhart, of 1 Rosylin Court, Second Street, was fined £25 for being in possession of one stub of a dagga cigarette.

Another European, Raymond Digby Cathro, of 15 North Avenue, denied being in possession of the same stub. He was found guilty and jailed for 90 days. This included a suspended sentence of 60 days for similar offences which were brought into effect.
