Kenya pledges Zim support

- Esinathy Sibanda Chronicle Reporter

KENYA has pledged to continue supporting Zimbabwe on its journey to economic revival and international re-engagement.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyetta, through his Twitter account, said he was pleased that Zimbabwe is working towards addressing its challenges.

He condemned the imposition of sanctions on Zimbabwe.

President Kenyatta joins other African leaders who are calling for lifting of illegal sanctions on Zimbabwe imposed by the West.

“Today at State House, Nairobi, I hosted a special envoy Air Chief Marshal (Rtd) Perrance Shiri of Zimbabwe, who delivered a special message from President Emmerson Mnangagwa. I am glad to know that Zimbabwe is working towards addressing its challenges,” he said.

“Kenya continues to stand in solidarity with Zimbabwe as the country works to solve its challenges. Imposing sanctions on a country is like tying somebody’s hands and feet. We will give our support to bring back Zimbabwe to the global platform.”

Recently South African President Cyril Ramaphosa took the campaign against illegal sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe to the 49th edition of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland.

Speaking at an International Labour Organisation (ILO) meeting ahead of the WEF, President Ramaphosa said the sanctions against Zimbabwe were stifling the country’s economic growth.

“Zimbabwe has emerged from a very difficult political situation and they held recent elections which went well. But they still have sanctions that many countries around the world have imposed on them,” said President Ramaphosa.
